Recalling the first diet I ever used is a painful memory. After my family physician decided to put me on Insulin because at five foot three inches tall I was a 193 pound butterball, who had failed the ”sugar test” I called an endocrinologist.
His first word to me were, “why are you here?” I explained that my family physician wanted to put me on Insulin after a glucose tolerance test at the hospital. He then asked if I had been given a diet and instructions on how and when to eat. “No, nothing,” I replied.

So he reached over on his desk, picked up a small fold out card and started checking boxes and scribbling here and there. When through he handed me the card, all folded back up and said, “follow this diet and come back in 30 days. We will do an assessment then and decide where we will go from there.”
What he had given me was a 1200 calories per day diet card printed up by a famous milk company especially for endocrinologist who usually treat people for diabetes.
Breakfast had checked 1 bread, 1 meat, 1 fruit and 1/2 of a fat allowance (the equivalent of 1 pat of butter). Lunch, Snack, Dinner and just before bed Snack didn’t have much more information. Free foods were any raw green vegetables. Green Beans or anything cooked 1/2 cup was a serving and limited. One slice of White bread was used as the measure for 1/2 cup rice, a small baked potato…etc. Everything else was as allowed in the checked boxes which included fresh fruits, milk and butter or fats.
I wish I’d had access to a diet like the Fat Burning Furnace with its food lists, supplement suggestions to help burn fat…….I ended up losing 40 pounds and I did not have to take insulin….but it was hard work without all the calorie charts and Menu helps that are available now.
